i'm really confused now as to what is happening. Not really a mac user and i got an imac 2011 that i need to reinstall OS on as it was previously unable to install and there wasnt any time capsule backup
after creating the USB drive for installation, i proceeded to select it after pressing option on start up and after that this showed. is this normal? how long should i wait for it

FWIW, assuming the USB bootable installer you are using is good and has High Sierra or earlier on it, it should boot from the installer. It is considered Vintage now. See this page for info on service for Vintage products.
i tried doing internet recovery, but somethng seems to be wrong. when the globe starts spinning, it doenst ask me for my wifi password and thereafter it goes to the apple logo and the first time i did it it hung at the apple logo and i just left it as it is. the 2nd time it just went the start up menu. i cant install os x from the start up menu because it said the required download is missing and i cant use time machine because it doesnt have a backup. disk utility cant erase the disk also T.T
No, it's not normal. Try Internet Recovery Mode.
You said you had one. You have to create one.

then where can i get the installer? vintage yes but what can i do to rectify this issue?
yes but you mentioned that mine might not be good so where can i download a good copy?
Click the link I just posted on how to create one. You need a working Mac and at least a 16GB flash drive.
i appreciate all the replies. if i do not have another mac is there a way i can get a good copy of the said file. thanks for the help so far
I would suggest you take it to an Apple Store or AASP for evaluation. My guess is it has a hardware problem.
