Using instruments in the Loop Library two questions.

Can the instruments be used outside of the Loop function? I want to use them as actual instruments to sound when I use my Midi keyboard. I tried moving one across but it does not respond to the keyboard press.

Otherwise how do I get other pianos like a Honky Tonk or Harpsichord?

Thanks.

PS I'll look at mainstage but if it has moved on from there perhaps that is not possible.

With GarageBand 10 you should check any audio unit, if it is 64bit, 32bit audio units are not supported. (GarageBand for Mac (v10.0): Unexpected behavior with Audio Units plug-ins – Apple Support)

VST plugins used to work well, but I had to uninstall the plug-ins I used previously after upgrading to GarageBand 10. I never tried KeyZone VST. After upgrading to Catslina I could only get components to work as plug-ins.

The VST plug-ins go into the folder /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/

Restart the Mac after installing them.

Then use them from the plug-ins brick in the smart controls for a midi track:

Hey there omits,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you have some questions about using instruments and Apple Loops in your GarageBand project. I’ll be happy to help.

‘Apple Loops are prerecorded musical phrases or riffs in the Loop Browser that you can use to easily add drum beats, rhythm parts, and other sounds to a project.’ You can loops and extend them throughout your project but they aren’t necessarily used like a patch. A patch is like an instrument and there are many you can choose from. If you don’t see a specific sound you want, you maybe able to download it directly from GarageBand. You can read more about this in the following links.

Info on Apple Loops:

What are Apple Loops?

Info on creating a track and choosing a patch:

You can find more details on these in the GarageBand User Guide:

All I got out of this was that I need to discover where on the internet I can find a patch for new Piano types. there is only one piano in garageband as far as I can see and do not know enough to copy and tune that one to something I need. Is the such as new Piano patches anywhere/

Thanks.

You can only use the loops shown in green to create software instrument tracks. The teen loops are Midi loops. But GarageBand 10 does not offer many software instrument loops. This has been a lot better in the older GarageBand '11. It came with plenty of software instrument loops, which were just great. We could exactly see the chords that the loops playing (in the editor pane) and modify them according to our needs. And they need much less storage than the real instrument loops in of the current GarageBand version.

I got myself plenty of more instruments patches by purchasing MainStage 3. It installed the sounds and loops of the five Jam Packs. There are pianos in the Jam Pack World Music and Symphony Orchestra. But it has been more than a year ago, that I purchased MainStage, so I am not sure, if it still will install the Jam Packs, if you purchase it now.
