Display doesn't fill screen when connected to external monitor

Looking at using my iPad as my main computer.

5th gen iPad running iPadOS 13.3

Connecting via the Apple digital HDMI adapter, display works fine, but won't extend the full width of the monitor as in the picture.

Is there any way I can alter the display to fit?

iPad, iOS 13

Screen Mirroring to an external display over HDMI is exactly that - it mirrors the screen and preserves the display Aspect Ratio of your iPad. This is entirely normal.

If you are outputting media content over HDMI, with an Aspect Ratio that matches that of the external display (typically 16:9), then the full screen will generally be utilised.

Your TV/display may have a display-mode whereby the native-aspect mirrored screen can be “stretched” to fill the screen, however, this will introduce distortion.

I hope that this clarification is helpful to you.
