TimeMachine failure: Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it is read-only

TimeMachine error "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it is read-only. You may need to repair or erase the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, select a different disk for backups."

Disk is locally mounted via USB. I've repaired it twice with no errors. I have permissions to read and write. Seagate Model SRD0NF2. Mac OS Extended (Journaled). 1.2TB available. First backup was nine months ago according to the date on the earlier backup; there are 68 other dated folders.

Suspect a bug. High Sierra. Just noticed Info option and says writeable. Time for bug report.

I had already repaired which required remounting (and it I had to remount it with DU). I had rebooted somewhere over the last few days. But it seemed ejecting triggered something and now it's backing up. Or maybe turning off and on automatic backup—Move the slider to OFF is no longer an option.

Still glad I filed a bug report as this shouldn't be necessary or at the minimum the error message needs to change since neither of the suggestions worked.

Thank you
