Low resolution when watching videos on iPhone XR?

Hello.

Recently, I have noticed a problem with my iPhone. When I go to watch videos on say Netflix or YouTube,

the quality is very low quality and bad. When I compared a movie on Netflix to a friend's iPhone XR, I noticed that the quality on their device was way better than on my phone. Is there a setting where I can change this? Is my device just defective? I do not believe this is a signal related issue as my friend and I were connected to the same Wi-Fi. Help would be very appreciated.
