Apple TV start up no sound to speakers.

Hi I have been asking this question more then once but can‘t find a solution. When I turn in my Apple TV 3 and 4 hooked up with HDMI cable to source 2 on my receiver NAD T748’s playing through an HDMI cable to the TV I am getting no sound until I select a different source, an example I have to select source 1 then go back to source 2 again to have sound start up through my speakers. I have tried delays on my Harmony 665, went back to using 3 remotes changed settings in the receiver, tv and Apple TV’s. I have changed to different HDMI cable different source/HDMI slot locations nothing has worked. Please help!

Perform a Factory Reset:

Ask the Manufacturer about how to perform a factory reset.

Crutchfield New Media - Contact Us. Try Resetting the Receiver. You will lose all settings, yet all would be set anew.

I havn't checked how many ports your reciever has but that shouldn't matter.

It would be interesting if you can reproduce the no sound behaviour with another device.

If you had a brand new Apple TV to compare to that would be one less thing to worry about.

Does it depend on if you turn on your Apple TV first or the reciever first?

Does it happen if you plugin the Apple TV turned on and the reciever set to that port?

It seems to be symmetrical so you can reproduce the problem regardless what port you use for Apple TV

Sometimes I had trouble follow all your steps.

How much does it hurt?

Proper sound is just a button press away?

I guess you have tried everything under audio and video already on the Apple TV.

This is not how it's supposed to work so something is broken or not up to date.

Question is what?

It sounds like a handshake problem.

If you have an optical cable you can run the digital out to one of the digital in ports on the back of the reciever.

Then setup speakers on the TV to transmit sound only to optical out.

Finally connect the Apple TV to the TV.

Thought this would be flawless but it might lead to swapping inputs on the reciever a task that already solves the problem.

I only have three input settings for my home cinema, digital in, AUX from my DAC and HDMI1 from my UHD Blu-ray player.

Any difference if the Apple TV is on or off when connecting to reciever input one with the reciever set as HDMI input 1

Basically Apple TV disconnected but on or off and reciever set to port 1.

Repeat for port 2 as the result should be the same.

Obviously when it fails confirm that the switch back and forth solves the problem.

I have to take a step back and at least consider my own Apple TV, it is not working perfectly.

I got a brand new replacement at the store and both has the same issue.

The problem exists but you are pretty alone with it.

I have only briefly tested plugging my Apple TV directly into my speaker system as the handshake through my 2011 samsung home cinema 5.1 does not support 4K. No problem wth sound.

If I were to bet and you had a different Apple TV the problem would remain while if you tried another reciever the problem would probably disappear instantly. That is the sad truth.

There are far too few people experiencing your problem for it widespread and a handshake problem is hard to fix as a consumer. You might be one of very few with your problem.

Try to do the best of the situation.

I ran across an Apple TV official feedback form and in my oppinion the problem when you narrow it down should be reported directly to apple and not their apple community.

They read every feedback and reply sometimes if they are able to.

Just to understand if you have the Apple TV connected to HDMI1 and turned on and the reciever is on HDMI2 the sound will work instantly when switching to HDMI1.

If you have the Apple TV connected to HDMI1 but turned on and then switch to HDMI1 from HDMI2 and afterwards turn on the Apple TV it won't work?

If you have Dolby Vision and either Netflix or Apple TV+ could you test something picture related?

No problem if you don't have Dolby Vision it seems pretty rare because of the cost.

Good luck testing finding a solid solution or at least knowing what does and doesn't work can be satisfying as long as something works.

Hi I have sound after I select a different source. An example if the receiver, tv and Apple TV all power up and the Apple TV is source 2 once in is all on I can use the Apple TV but has no sound. If I select source 1 then go back to source 2 the sound comes back. Something isn’t signalling right and I can’t figure out what. So I just trouble shooting if the above way until I figure it out or someone has answers.

You should be able to hook up the Apple TV to your TV just for troubleshooting.

You should get sound out of the TV speakers easy that way.

This is not what you want but better than no sound.

Next step is to connect the TV to the reciever through optical or coaxial digital cable or through ARC using HDMI and the ARC port on the TV. With the right settings this will bring you surrounds sound, In my case it's important that the TV doesn't try to convert surroundsound to stereo PCM as surround PCM is impossible across my optical wire. Also my reciever don't support ARC so your result may vary.

Only better sound coming out of Apple TV as far as I know is Dolby Atmos. If this is what you're aiming at I'm no expert and apple has a long page about how to get Atmos to work mainly by plugging it straight into the reciever which in your case didn't work too well as ARC often don't handle Dolby Atmos. As far as I can tell your reciever don't support Dolby Atmos.

Hope you get som sound soon.
