If so, then the water got further into the phone than the charging port.

Last week, water got into my iPhone charging port, it wouldn’t let me charge it because a message came up saying charging not available, liquid has been detected in the lighting connector. Disconnect to allow the connector to dry, this may take several hours, and another saying Liquid detected in lighting connector, disconnect to allow the connector to dry.
