I'd assume the grocery store is kinda busy at the moment with what's going on out there (Coronavirus). So, maybe, just maybe, their servers are a bit slow and communication with Apple is a bit too busy.

What card are you talking about? If you mean an Apple Card, you swipe it the same way you use any other card. If the terminal has a chip slot on it you insert the card in that. And if it has a wireless “fan” symbol you double-press the side button on your phone and hold the phone near the terminal. If you use this last method you get a bigger cash back credit of 3%.
