Slow SSD with internal SATA cable but fast with SATA to USB?

You should replace the internal cable. They tend to wear out over time. You can find them at OWC: https://eshop.macsales.com/search/?q=ssd+cable

The SATA cable on that particular model had an extremely high rate of failure. Replacing the cable should restore the performance.
