cant get google as search engine

ever since my safari updated itself, I can no longer have google as my search engine. Instead, it's yahoo. I know this sounds so petty but yahoo search just does not get the job done and im wondering how I can fix the issue? I already tried changing it in the preferences.


i am using a mac book pro, mid-2015, with macos mojave

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.14

 1. Remove Adware

     Run  the latest release of Malwarebytes for Mac to remove malware/adware, if installed on your Mac.

     For instructions:  Install Malwarebytes for Mac v4   Uninstall Malwarebytes for Mac

     Click the “Scan Now” button. Once done, quit Malwarebytes for Mac.

     Restart the computer and relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.


     Repeat the scan couple of times.


 2. Additional steps to take if necessary (1) 


  1. Remove unknown extensions:  Safari > Preferences > Extensions

  2. Reset search engine:    https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/customize-your-search-ibrwe75c2a3c/mac

  3. Reset  Homepage.   https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/set-your-homepage-ibrw1020/mac 

  4. Restart your Mac. Relaunch Safari holding the Shift key down.      


3. Additional steps to take if necessary (2)


   1. Remove unknown profiles.

      System Preferences > General > Profiles

      Open System Preferences, click the “Profiles” icon ( a checkmark on a gear) .

      When Profiles pane opens, select the unknown profile and click the minus button at the bottom.

  2. Remove unknown Login item.

      System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items

       Authenticate and unlock the lock.

       Highlight the unknown login item  and click the “-“ button at the bottom left to remove it.

Your MacBook Pro is not supported with Catalina; 2012 and later are necessary.

You have either installed from the usual pile of problematic add-on apps (e.g. VPN client add-ons, add-on anti-malware, add-on anti-virus, add-on cleaners, or ilk), or have some adware, or potentially a combination.


Follow the removal instructions above, from the reply by dominic23. Failing that, try Safe Mode as mentioned above and see if that works better.


If those efforts fail, please download and enable full device access for and then run EtreCheck. Then open a new reply here and then press the button that looks like a printed page to get a text input box large enough to paste the hardware and software configuration report here.
