Kernel panic from iPhone USB tethering

I had a kernel panic this morning. I'm not sure, but it reads as if it was something to do with my using my iPhone 3GS as an Internet Tether through USB [only, I turned off bluetooth]. It was the only different thing that I was doing at the time.

Anybody know if this is a known error?

The relevant detail of the panic is:

I've been getting KP's lately, too. Since I've updated to iOS4 on my iPhone 3G, when I tether data from my iPhone to my MBP 13" via USB, I randomly get panics.

I've isolated this down to USB tethering as well, because tethering via bluetooth doesn't cause this to happen.

I've done a restart to my iPhone (proper shut down AND force reboot) and still get random kernel panics by USB tethering.

Kinda annoying, especially since connecting to my iPhone to tether via Bluetooth is flaky at times in OS X.

I'll be sure to post what info it dumps out next time I get this error.

This isn't a fix to what seems to be a real problem but why not use bluetooth? I tried tethering out for a month and set up with bluetooth on my MBP 15 w/ 10.6.4 and an iP4 with iOS 4.1. Speed was fine.
I would send the details to Apple Feedback; http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Also do any of you have other devices plugged into the USB ports at the same time?
Conflicts still happen.
Is your Airport wireless on?
Try with it off.
Also turn off Bluetooth.
iTunes open or closed?
I would think iTunes would occasionally communicate with the phone and there could be a conflict if the system is using the same port for data.
Try it with iTunes closed unless iTunes is required to use USB tethering.

I got the kernel panic twice -
Once when i hooked the phone to my Mac, don't remember what was on and what was off.
The second time was when I disconnected the phone after it worked fine while the computer was in sleep mode, Airport off, Bluetooth off, iTunes off.

I'm not going to voluntarily test when I get kernel panic and when not. I think it's understandable...

BTW - About the USB vs Bluetooth tethering, Besides Bluetooth being unstable at times, you cannot set the iPhone for Bluetooth only, so if you want to tether while charging, it will tether through USB anyway.

I THINK I might have the same issue too on my 2day old Mac Pro 6-core. I tried USB iPhone internet tethering and then moments later it gave me the kernel panic. Here are my Mac Pro specs:

Mac OS X 10.6.4
Intel Xeon (6-core) 3.33GHz
12GB RAM
1TB (HDD1)
1TB (HDD2)
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB

Here's the kernel panic report:

Please tell me that this is ONLY because of the iPhone USB tethering, because if it is then I'll never touch that **** thing again. The whole reason why i went all out and caved in £3700 for this machine straight from Apple without any 3rd-party internal hardware is because I was sick of Windows and it's BSODs. I own a mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro and it never gave me any kernel panics of any sort since the day i bought it (been a year now touch wood).

The ONLY 3rd-party peripheral that I use are my HP display and my Logitech USB mouse.

From what i understood from the kernel panic report (i think) is that it's caused by AppleUSBEthernet, meaning the iPhone USB tethering.

PLease correct me if i'm wrong.

Ok as a follow up. I tried tethering my iPhone 3GS iOS4.0 via USB and I opened up a couple of Google Chrome tabs and logged in some forums and accounts, and logged out, tried streaming a video real quick and opened VLC to watch a movie and I got NO KERNEL PANIC...veeeery strange considering the first time this happened only took it seconds before it crashed my Mac Pro 2010 model. But now I've left the tethering for about 15mins and no Kernel Panic. Maybe it was a one off thing?? Not sure, in any case, I've had other issues with my Mac Pro so I contacted Apple to have a repair service center come pick it up for inspection and a **** possible fix! They're coming tomorrow morning. Hopefully this will be fixed.

Ok, I just got my 6th panic in 5 hours.
I can't precisely reproduce it down but here's a few observations :
-Happens while i'm tethered via USB
-Happens in both chrome and firefox
-Happens only while big files are downloading
-Never happened while i was in 32 bits, only since im in 64.

i can't spend a whole day using bluetooth tethering, it's training my iPhone's battery. Let's hope they fix the problem.

Oct 31, 2010 1:45 PM in response to GavinTan

Yep, Just throwing my hat in this ring. I too am experiencing kernel panics with USB tethering (iphone 4 in my case) on a Mac Pro in 64-bit mode.

To answer the question that was posed here earlier in the thread - using bluetooth works, but USB is miles better - speedtest on bluetooth gives 0.8Mbps - USB speedtest is 6Mbps! So the speed difference is huge.

Hope this gets fixed.

This happens to me as well. I have updated to iOS 4.2.1 and my MacBook Pro from 2009 is udpated to the latest version of Snow Leopard along with any other software updates fron Apple.

The problem occurs while using any browser, regardless of whether I have iTunes running or not. But it only happens when I use the USB cable, as several people have pointed out here as well. Bluetooth tethering does not seem to cause this issue.

This is happening frequently enough that Apple really needs to get this fixed. It is hardly of any use to me to use the Internet tethering option via USB anymore, since I can't tell at which point the computer will get a kernel panic.

All bug reports have been sent to Apple along with information on what I did when the problem occured, but so far, nothing.

Mar 3, 2011 1:44 AM in response to Fustbariclation

HTF do you raise a support call with Apple these days? This kernel panic has been hitting me since my older MacBook 13"... (So it's not just 64bit kernel, because MB13 didn't do 64bit). And now hits my MBP15 almost every day (And yes you can use BT, but when you're charging your iPhone while using tethering, you're SOL).

My MB has reported EVERY panic to Apple. Never once have I had a reply, or a sorry, or even seen anything anywhere to indicate they even GIS.

So... I was going to manually raise a problem... But I can't seem to find the link on their 'support' pages to do so... Forums? Not a problem. But when Apple don't read them, what's the use?

Chalk up another one for me. I got my MBP two days ago, and I was wondering why I was getting KPs from a factory fresh computer. First I thought it had to do with some programs I was running, reinstalled OSX and it still kept happening. Then I thought to unplug my iphone (usb tethering of course) and it has stopped completely. This is really quite unacceptable. I expected to be able to use this extensively while traveling.
