Kernel panic from iPhone USB tethering

I had a kernel panic this morning. I'm not sure, but it reads as if it was something to do with my using my iPhone 3GS as an Internet Tether through USB [only, I turned off bluetooth]. It was the only different thing that I was doing at the time.

Anybody know if this is a known error?

The relevant detail of the panic is:

I've been getting KP's lately, too. Since I've updated to iOS4 on my iPhone 3G, when I tether data from my iPhone to my MBP 13" via USB, I randomly get panics.

I've isolated this down to USB tethering as well, because tethering via bluetooth doesn't cause this to happen.

I've done a restart to my iPhone (proper shut down AND force reboot) and still get random kernel panics by USB tethering.

Kinda annoying, especially since connecting to my iPhone to tether via Bluetooth is flaky at times in OS X.

I'll be sure to post what info it dumps out next time I get this error.

MacBook Pro 2011, 2.3 GHz, 8GB, 500 SSD, OS X 10.6.6
Kernel panic while iPhone USB tethered and typically download larger files, especially Mail with attachments. Seems to work while using WiFi tethering. AppleCare did not have anything to offer, just try erasing HD and reloading OS. Still same kernel panic after OS reload. Frequency increases over time to a point of unsuitability. I guess only option is not to use Iphone USB tethering.

I too have the same problem with my brand new MBP. The only solution I found after updating to iOS 4.3 and while they fix the issue is to use Personal Hotspot. I disabled in Network Preferences the iPhone network interface by putting it in inactive mode so that when I plug my iPhone with tethering enabled, it doesn't use the USB interface. I then select my Personal Hotspot.

This works for me at this point but I sure hope they fix this **** problem.

Same issue here with my new MacBook Pro received just last week. Everything works fine until this morning when I tried the new personal hotspot feature with my iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3 downloaded just last night. Without the personal hotspot via USB everything now seems fine.

Strange though that my much older MacBook (the model with silver keys) works without any hitch with the tethering feature.

Same here...

2011 MacBook Pro , 2.2 Ghz i7 17"; OS X 10.6.6

It seems like kernel panics get more frequent when using Parallels 6 in shared network mode. For sure I can confirm that download big files almost always causes a kernel panic.

We have something like 53 posts on this subject now. And I've read about the same problem in many other forums. One would think that this should be a big enough issue to be addressed by Apple!?

Can confirm my new MacBook Pro 10.6.6 has kernel panic with tethering when Kernel is in 64-bit mode but NOT in 32-bit mode. I have had 6 kernel panics in the last two days trying to use 64-bit mode kernel and USB tethering. All reports sent to Apple.

I was interested/surprised to note that running the 32-bit kernel does not preclude other applications (OSX native or third party) from running in 64-bit! This strikes me as a good thing - parallels virtual machine engine running in 64-bit mode is MUCH faster!

In my hands this has nothing to do with iTunes or downloading a large file as previously reported here. I am using 32-bit USB tethering from iPhone 3GS right now to submit this reply. I have mail, safari, parallels 6 desktop, filemaker pro and citrix online plugin running without problems. In 64-bit mode kernel this would have undoubtedly caused kernel panic. MBP is also syncing with MobileMe and I have USB hard drive plugged in as well. So far so good in 32-bit mode! If I get a kernel panic in 32-bit mode, will report back...and submit to Apple.

I hope this gets fixed soon...

Here you go:

On-disk setting (persistent)

To select the 32-bit kernel for the current startup disk, use the following command in Terminal:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386

To select the 64-bit kernel for the current startup disk, use the following command in Terminal:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

You then need to reboot.

Note: This setting is stored in the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist file and will take effect every time you start up from this disk. If you start up from a different disk, the setting on that disk, or the hardware default, will take effect.

Manually

You reboot and hold either "32" or 64" keys to start in one or the other.
