Kernel panic from iPhone USB tethering

I had a kernel panic this morning. I'm not sure, but it reads as if it was something to do with my using my iPhone 3GS as an Internet Tether through USB [only, I turned off bluetooth]. It was the only different thing that I was doing at the time.

Anybody know if this is a known error?

The relevant detail of the panic is:

I've been getting KP's lately, too. Since I've updated to iOS4 on my iPhone 3G, when I tether data from my iPhone to my MBP 13" via USB, I randomly get panics.

I've isolated this down to USB tethering as well, because tethering via bluetooth doesn't cause this to happen.

I've done a restart to my iPhone (proper shut down AND force reboot) and still get random kernel panics by USB tethering.

Kinda annoying, especially since connecting to my iPhone to tether via Bluetooth is flaky at times in OS X.

I'll be sure to post what info it dumps out next time I get this error.

Try turning Personal Hotspot off before connecting the iPhone to the MB (or put the iPhone into flight mode).

I maintain my iPhone with an iMac and so had not encountered the problem of trying to update the iPhone OS with a Macbook that keeps crashing.

Of course, if you only have internet access from the MB by tethering the iPhone then you will not be able to run iTunes to update the iPhone OS unless you use wi-fi or bluetooth tethering instead of USB tethering.

I've just started experiencing the same issue with my brand new 15" MBP. It panicked on me three times last night while I was tethering with my iPhone 4. That didn't happen with the MBP I had before (the last generation, just before the Thunderbolt / Quad Core). The error dump looks very like the rest of the ones listed here - a networking / browser related issue.

This worries me quite a bit because I just had to replace my last MBP because it was giving me kernal panics daily because of a fault in the Nvidia chip. Sigh. I feel like the unluckiest Mac user in the world!

after reading all posts in this discussion and updating to latest ios

I tried to tether my

iPhone {ios 4.3.2 3GS ; Sep2009; MC131J; Firmware:05.16.02 (newest firm ware available Today )}

's Internet Connection with my

Macbook Pro {Mac OS 10.6.7(most updated version); march 2011; 13"; 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5; 4GB 1333 MHZ RAM, and most recent iTunes 10.2.2 (12)}

via USB and unfortunately got kernel panic (You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button...) again.

it seems there is no problem with USB tethering when when you use it in windows 7 installed through BootCamp.

and Bluetooth Tethering is still unstable and keep dropping every now and then both in Mac Os and Windows.

so at this point; apples solution here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3728 (thanks to Michael Paine) doesn't realy Help.

so it seems the only solution (Temproraily) for the problem could be using your Mac in 32bit Kernel Mode (look at this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773?viewlocale=en_US) it works without any problem and most of general users don't feel the diffrence.

I have been thering my 2011 Macbook Pro to my iPhone 3GS all week using a bluetooth connection, which has worked fine without any issues.

Today I tried tethering to my iPhone again, but this time using a USB connection.

Over a period of about 20minutes the Macbook has 3 kernal panics crashing completely out and needing a restart each time.

This issue only occurs when tethering my iPhones 3G connection to my macbook via a USB connection.
