Kernel panic from iPhone USB tethering

I had a kernel panic this morning. I'm not sure, but it reads as if it was something to do with my using my iPhone 3GS as an Internet Tether through USB [only, I turned off bluetooth]. It was the only different thing that I was doing at the time.

Anybody know if this is a known error?

The relevant detail of the panic is:

I've been getting KP's lately, too. Since I've updated to iOS4 on my iPhone 3G, when I tether data from my iPhone to my MBP 13" via USB, I randomly get panics.

I've isolated this down to USB tethering as well, because tethering via bluetooth doesn't cause this to happen.

I've done a restart to my iPhone (proper shut down AND force reboot) and still get random kernel panics by USB tethering.

Kinda annoying, especially since connecting to my iPhone to tether via Bluetooth is flaky at times in OS X.

I'll be sure to post what info it dumps out next time I get this error.

This is what worked for me, I have a MBP 8,2 i7 2.2 with the firmware upgrade locked up. I rarely need to use 32-bit software but when I do, the button holding in the beginning 3 & 2 doesn't work since the EFI is locked. The easiest way to do this is through this commands. Run them, reboot, use what you have to use, run the 64-bit command, reboot, keep going with your life... Thanks for the solution!

I use a USB laptop hub that has in ethernet interface. When I enabled the USB ethernet interface while booted in 64-bit, it caused the same kernel crash as tethering my iPhone 4. Interestingly, the solution of upgrading iTunes, trashing the iTunes .app file, then reinstalling iTunes fixed both the iPhone tethering issue AND the USB ethernet issue even though there is no obvious link between iTunes and the USB ethernet interface. I can boot in 64-bit with no crashes now.

Azinicus, you may want to try the iTunes reinstallation even though it does not seem to have a direct linkto your 3G USB modem. You might not ever have to boot into 32bit that way.

Reinstalling itunes defenitely solves Mac's kernel panic and some Network problem because in fact a program inside itunes bundle is in charge of comunicating with network devices( Bonjour!?) . thats why you have to install itunes to be able to connect and use apple's Network devices on your Windows PC (altought i think apple give away the program (bonjour!?) as a stand alone program as well)

Hi there, as this seems to be a hot topic, my two cents to second all the others:

I confirm that uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling from a fresh download solves this issue, with no need to boot in 32bit mode. I'm currently writing from tethered iPhone and everything is working, no kernel panic since more than 3 hours connection time.

- Uninstall iTunes (trash the iTunes application in the Applications folder)

- Reboot

- Download iTunes from apple.com

- Install iTunes (no damages to your library and preferences)

- retry tethering, it works

I have MPB 2011 i7 and iPhone 3GS 4.3.3.

Cheers.

Hello there:

I started getting kernel panic messages when I moved to India and started accessing internet using USB CDMA modem. The MBP will throw a KP while connected to internet with connectivity duration between 1mins to 1.5hrs. At first I was not sure if this was due to a OS X bug or a bug in the USB modem's driver. But I was lucky to have landed in this forum. I've booted in 32-bit mode and have had no issues for last three days. Right now I've been connected to internet for 3.5 hrs and counting. Thanks a lot guys! 🙂

I was trying to trash iTune and reinstall it to check for the second solution. But whenever I try to trash the iTune.app OS X gives and error saying this app is necessary for Mac operation and can't be deleted. Any help in how to trash the app and reinstall it.

I've a 2011 MBP i7, 4gb RAM and OS X Lion.

Thanks!
