I had a kernel panic this morning. I'm not sure, but it reads as if it was something to do with my using my iPhone 3GS as an Internet Tether through USB [only, I turned off bluetooth]. It was the only different thing that I was doing at the time.

Anybody know if this is a known error?

The relevant detail of the panic is:

I've been getting KP's lately, too. Since I've updated to iOS4 on my iPhone 3G, when I tether data from my iPhone to my MBP 13" via USB, I randomly get panics.

I've isolated this down to USB tethering as well, because tethering via bluetooth doesn't cause this to happen.

I've done a restart to my iPhone (proper shut down AND force reboot) and still get random kernel panics by USB tethering.

Kinda annoying, especially since connecting to my iPhone to tether via Bluetooth is flaky at times in OS X.

I'll be sure to post what info it dumps out next time I get this error.

I"m pleased it's not just me!

Actually I think that part of the problem is that the panic information isn't automatically sent to Apple - when the machine boots back up it is, of course, using USB tethering, so it takes a while for that to set itself up - by which time the panic report has given up.

Anyway, the good news is that it should be easy for Apple to fix - isolated down to an error in a coms driver makes it a pretty small target to hit. It's probably a buffer over-run/under-run or similarly easy coding error too. Pity they don't use Ada for their OS coding language, then this sort of thing wouldn't happen.

I'm having the exact same problem on my iPhone 4 with 4.0.1. I've gotten 3 kernel panics on my MacBook Pro trying to tether via USB with Bluetooth turned off on the phone just today to the point where it's simply not usable.

I'm experiencing the kernel panics too while using tethering through USB on my iOS 4.01 iPhone 3G. Is there a solution for this?
  • Fustbariclation Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
It gets worse. Today I have another Kernel Panic. This time I was not using tethering. It looks, again, like a USB ethernet error. My iPhone was connected at the time, but I didn't have tethering turned on.

    Here's the panic detail:

Interesting. It happens on my 15" Macbook Pro too - since there aren't hundreds of reports of this, maybe it's connected to that somehow.

I am running in 64 bit mode, anyone else?
I wonder if the driver is having issues with running in 64 bit.

Anyway, the good news is that it should be easy for Apple to fix

But no one has told them.

This is a peer-to-peer forum. Apple is not here.
If you want/need support from Apple, contact them directly.

You will never get a response from Apple in these forums.

Yes also on my iMac 27" i7 and Mac Pro 8 core Nehalem 2,26 GHz tethering the iPhone by USB in 64 bit kernel mode leads to KP!

I'm also getting this on my Snow Leopard, 2010 Core 15 MacBook Pro.

Kernel Panics when tethering, it's starting to cause me a lot of concern.
