If you want to crash land on a deserted island and discover a lost civilization, then go ahead and install Snow Leopard. Great when it was supported by Apple, and now shunned by application developers, banks that reject the old Safari security features, and also by Google who no longer supports Apple Mail in Snow Leopard. Compared to El Capitan, which was also way behind in Security updates, Snow Leopard will be the ultimate in retrograde computing in the 21st century.

I’ve just gone the other way from Snow Leapord to El Capitan on a late 2009 MacMini. Granted, I did swap out the original HDD for an SSD, along with upgrading from 2gb to 4gb RAM. However with those changes I’m genuinely shocked how well my little Mini copes with El Capitan. From a purely functional standpoint it’s unthinkable for me to go back. Perhaps consider investing a little to upgrade your machine. You can’t really expect blistering performance with older hardware, unless you accept an ancient OS.
