Time Machine couldn't complete the back up... Error code:640

Time Machine stopped backing up 2 days ago - message appears - "Time Machine couldn't complete the back up... Error code:640". Plenty of space available. Rebooted both MacBook air and TC. Cant find any reference to Error 640 online. Any help welcome. MacBook Air Mid 2013. Catalina 10.15.3.

Thanks for the update. Welcome to the "Catalina Corrupted Backup Club".

Honestly at this point, backups to a Time Capsule.....especially using Catalina.....are not going to be all that reliable, so if your Mac's data is really important to you, I would think about an additional backup plan. Something like using a USB drive connected directly to your Mac and a good application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

Chances are, your Time Capsule is 5+ years old as well, so there is that as well.

Good luck!

Don't waste your time looking for a list of error code messages.......Apple does not bother with things like this.

Since you have already restarted your Mac and TC, the next check would be to find out whether Catalina has messed up your backups.....as it has been known to do for some folks.

Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the Mac's screen

Click on Verify Backups

The process might take anywhere from 10-60 minutes or more depending on how much data is stored on the TC disk. Let the process run until it completes or until you receive another error message.

Post back when the process has run. If an error message does appear, post back with the exact text of the message.
