imac fusion drive

is it normal for my 5k imac to make a clicking sometimes when it is being used. My imac imac has 1tb fusion drive from mid 2017. My computer seems to run perfectly smoothly. So does it really the mean the hard disk side of the fusion drive is failing or is it normal?

I've already asked you to provide the DriveDx report(s) for the internal drive(s) so I can review it in case it may contain clues. I've also asked you to record the noise to see if I can recognize the noise since some types of noises are very distinctive. Without this information there is absolutely nothing anybody here can do for you. Even with this information it may not help us to identify the problem, but it is the best we can do remotely.

While it is extremely rare for a hard to make a noise without actually dying I have seen one case where the drive would work normally while making an odd noise. In addition the sound could be coming from a fan, a speaker, the optical drive, or it could be some electronic noise from the power supply or Logic Board. We cannot tell since we cannot hear the sound ourselves. Sometimes the only way a repair technician can identify the source of a sound is for a technician to open the computer.

You need to take the computer to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined. Currently Apple Stores outside of China are closed, but an AASP may be open.

Also make sure to backup your computer regularly just in case it stops working or you accidentally delete something important.

Good luck.

Doesn't sound good,

This may tell us...

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

https://pastebin.com/

Or use the paperclip at the bottom of a Reply to attach the full report here. :)

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

First of all make sure you have a good verified working backup. A failing drive is a very likely possibility here.

Run the Apple Diagnostics. See if the clicking changes during the fan test (the diagnostic will run the fan at slow & high speed) or during the drive test.

Run DriveDX to check the health of the hard drive. Post the report here if it reports as healthy so I can see if there are any signs of old age or anything that looks to be a concern. Post the report using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

Since I cannot see or hear anything on your Mac it is hard to say what is going on. Seeing the actual DriveDX report for both the SSD and hard drive may give me clues. I don't know which drive is reporting high temps without seeing the report.

Can you make a recording of the sound and post it here as that may help me identify it although it can be difficult locating the source of some sounds even when the computer is right in front of me.

No matter what you should make regular system backups just in case your hard drive is beginning to fail. Once the Apple Stores reopen you can take the computer to an Apple Store for a free evaluation even outside of warranty.

Your question regarding the dead pixels has been answered in your other thread; it is impossible for other users to determine if it is normal or not. You will need to contact Apple support regarding those.

As for the clicking, it could be a failing hard drive. And no, we would not know why. Since Apple stores are closed, you will need to wait, but I would contact Apple support and either mail it in or wait and get an appointment at a Genius Bar; they have excellent testing equipment. Ask to have them run diagnostics.

Remember, we are all other users, not Apple employees.

It is like when something is spinning, the clicking appears to happen at random intervals but the thing is that my computer has not seemed to loose any data. sicne one year. Also, i have tried running the fan and no clicking appears at that moment. MY Imac has a fusion. drive so IDk. Please tell me what is the source as even the apple hardware tests states no issues.
