Files app SMB Sharing/Authentication Issue

I'm trying to share some folders on my mac running Catalina. Including an external HDD.

File sharing is on and the permissions are all correctly set.

I connect via the Files app on my iPad (Connect to Server > SMB address) and I see the root directory file structure of my shared folders.

HOWEVER, when I try and explore each folder, I get the following loop error:

"Authentication Required – To view the items in this folder, you need to authenticate."

Any ideas? Thanks.

Interesting, let’s try this:

Create a new administrative user account within System Preferences > Users. Sign out of your primary account and sign into your new user account. Attempt to create a network share again. If it works then there is a software conflict on your primary account. If this does not work then it sounds like there might be an operating system problem which would require you to reinstall macOS.
