Touch ID not working for Apple Pay

iPhone 8+ 13.3.1

Touch ID enabled. Works perfectly for everything except Apple Pay (which has been successfully set up for years).

Resting a clean finger on the Home Button fails to launch Apple Pay.

Anyone any ideas, please?

Thanks!

Mark,

You are wrong. Resting a finger on the home button DOES NOT launch Apple Pay. The contactless card reader at the vendor signals the NFC chip in the iPhone to launch Apple Pay and then your fingerprint is tested for validity.

Pay with iPhone with Touch ID

  1. To use your default card, rest your finger on Touch ID.
  2. Hold the top of your iPhone within a few centimeters of the contactless reader until you see Done and a checkmark on the display.

Watch the demo to see how it works

You cannot automatically launch Apple Pay by just resting your finger on the home button without the iPhone being in close proximity of the contactless card reader.

Hello Mark Sealey,

I see that you're having an issue when trying to use Touch ID with Apple Pay. I certainly understand your concern, and I'd be happy to look into this with you.

Let's have you take a look at the following articles with some steps that can help with this issue that you've been having with Touch ID.

If Touch ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad

Use Touch ID on iPhone and iPad

If you go through these steps, including trying to enroll another fingerprint and the issue remains, respond back with the answers to the following questions.

  1. When did this issue begin?
  2. Have you recently made changes to your iPhone?
  3. If you restart your iPhone, does the issue remain?

Thank you for your offer of help, MoonJ!

All aspects of my Touch ID work perfectly (thanks for those inks; am familiar with their content): it's ONLY APPLE PAY which fails to launch when it should.

I have to go to my Wallet.

Previously, resting a clean finger on the Home button invariably launched Apple Pay… I know because I did it so many times by mistake :-)

That has stopped working. Even if I leave a finger there for 20 seconds. All other Touch ID functions work as they should.

No changes to iPhone other than regular approved updates. Restarting makes no difference: I can now only get to Apple Pay by manually navigating to the subfolder in which I keep Wallet. Tap on Wallet and Apple Pay launches as expected.

Thank you for your reply, kareng12!

It may well be that the bug has only appeared after an iOS update. I don't use Apple Pay very often; but wanted to start doing so to avoid credit card contact… social distancing etc.

As I say - and I apologize if I was not clear - the fault only affects the launch of Apple Pay. All other Touch ID operations work as expected.

I deleted my right index finger print and rescanned it. All Touch ID with that new print work perfectly - except only Apple Pay. It will not launch.

Thank you, Axel F.

Because I wondered whether Apple Pay would only launch in proximity to the vendor device, I tried this under the screen - where the checker showed me - at Whole Foods. Apple Pay did not launch.

I wiggled, and I jiggled, and I swayed and I swooped (IOW I repositioned my iPhone up down and side to side to get that NFC chip to respond). But it did not.

Are you also saying that behavior has changed from previous iOses, Axel, please: I know I often used to accidentally launch Apple Pay/Wallet when touching the Home button… instead of invoking SIRI, for instance?

Hi Mark,

There was an option where a Double Click of the home button would launch Apple Pay. That Option was found in

Settings ->Wallet & Apple Pay to invoke if the iPhone was locked, if I remember correctly. Mere resting your finger did not do the trick. So if the iPhone is locked then one would double-click on the home button to launch Apple Pay.
