Mac OS 10.15.4: Random restarts due to panic(cpu 1 caller

My MacBook is restarting randomly from last few days with following error messages:

  1. "BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header)" (freezes, need to restart manually, 5-6 times a day)
  2. panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffff00df677b4): x86 CPU CATERR detected (automatic restart)
  3. panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff025f05f64): "void AppleEmbeddedPCIeUpLinkMgmt: (automatic restart)

In all three cases, only safari was open with background services (Creative Cloud and OneDrive only). Nothing installed recently.

Can someone please explain the reason for these panics, logs are as follows:

I want to confirm that after the upgrade to 10.15.6 i haven't had a single kernel panic, it has been a month an a half crash free, so i believe it got solved, even if nothing hints at the possibility in the Release Notes of 10.15.6.

My crashes were "void AppleEmbeddedPCIeUpLinkMgmt" and "x86 CPU CATERR detected".

I have similar issue with my MacBook. My main guess is that it becomes hot and restarts. Specially when I connect it to two monitors at home it happens more. Here is my MacBook specs:

macOS Catalina. version 10.15.4

It is a new MacBook and I am going to use the warranty if it continues like this.

I also own a 2018 MBP 13" i7/16GB and was also having Bad Magic crashes when on OS X 10.15.3. I did a Factory Restore and it seemed to help.

However, ever since I updated to OS X 10.15.4, I started getting the CPU CATERR. I am inclined to try another Factory Restore.

Worth mention I have 2 external monitors connected via a CalDigit USB-C hub.

I run AVG Free AV, Little Snitch, iStat, Capto, MS Office, Slack, Chrome and 8x8 in parallel.

Equally frustrated!

I've had this problem for a few months on my work laptop, even before I upgraded to Catalina. One thing I noticed is that the screen would freeze for a bit, and then before the reboot the fans would go super high for a few seconds and then reboot. I started to wonder if it wasn't a hardware issue of some sort.

Long story short, my company sent me a new laptop, same model, same year, and I used my TimeMachine backup. The problem no longer occurs. I'm left with the realization that it must be a hardware issue.

Apr 3, 2020 8:28 AM in response to BinnX1

I have same issue on 2018 macbook pro.

I was running Creative Cloud (Adobe apps), editing video at Premiere Pro. When it freezes, i realize the CPUs temperature is too high.

In the last week, it occoured several times. Im so frustaded. Help us Apple :(

I'm also having this issue with my new Macbook Pro purchase from this week. Becoming more worried that it's a hardware issue but can't pinpoint what's going on.

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB / Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Early this week, I got a new computer and began to set everything up, downloading software (Chrome, Slack, Word), etc. And 15 minutes in, the computer screen/trackpad froze, the fan went full speed and shut down. That worried me on a new computer. Did not copy the error code.

Continued to have issues shut down issues throughout the week. Whenever the computer was left idle and went to sleep for more than 3+ hours, it would shut down for some strange reason. Always unexpected error shut down error when turning it back on. Didn't copy error code. I did an SMC reset, but it didn't help with the issue.

Today, I decided to factory reset by formatting the hard drive and installing new OS. And the same issue happened to me from day 1. While installing word, the computer screen/trackpad froze, the fan went full speed and shut down.

This is the error that I got and looking for suggestions... Should I get this device looked at by Apple? Would really hate to need to mail these in during these times.

I have had this problem since February 2020 with TWO brand new 16" mac book pros. Apple replaced the first Mac book pro after being unable to fix the problem. I waited three weeks for a new one and within 24 hours of receiving the second brand new 16" mac book pro, the problem occurred twice within 24 hours. It has occured repeatedly every day since. There are no peripherals attached. It sometimes happens when using Word, but there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason as an explanation as to why it happens. Engineering has not been able to fix the problem. As soon as the Apple stores open in Manhattan I will return the second new Mac book pro for full credit.

I have these panics too. For me the context is running FaceTime with external audio headphone and then after some usage time of FaceTime, I get a audiobridged panic. It happens several times per day now which is making working from home difficult.

The symptoms are in sequence:

1) Audio dropouts start to increase

2) Audio disappears

3) 3 to 4 minutes later the mouse freezes

4) Then reboot spontaneously
