Mac OS 10.15.4: Random restarts due to panic(cpu 1 caller

My MacBook is restarting randomly from last few days with following error messages:

  1. "BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header)" (freezes, need to restart manually, 5-6 times a day)
  2. panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffff00df677b4): x86 CPU CATERR detected (automatic restart)
  3. panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff025f05f64): "void AppleEmbeddedPCIeUpLinkMgmt: (automatic restart)

In all three cases, only safari was open with background services (Creative Cloud and OneDrive only). Nothing installed recently.

Can someone please explain the reason for these panics, logs are as follows:

Same here!!

I took my 2018 13" MBP to w/ Touch Bar to Genius bar over a month ago for a 'Bad Magic' error and they couldn't figure it out.

Yesterday I updated to Catalina 10.15.4 from previous version and have had random errors 3 times now for 'Panic: watchdog detected', 'Bad Magic!' , and ' panic: CPU CATERR detected'.

This is really frustrating especially now with everything going on. Its my only way of working from home.

Mar 31, 2020 1:58 PM in response to Mrf792

I also own a 2018 MBP 13" i7/16GB and was also having Bad Magic crashes when on OS X 10.15.3. I did a Factory Restore and it seemed to help.

However, ever since I updated to OS X 10.15.4, I started getting the CPU CATERR. I am inclined to try another Factory Restore.

Worth mention I have 2 external monitors connected via a CalDigit USB-C hub.

I run AVG Free AV, Little Snitch, iStat, Capto, MS Office, Slack, Chrome and 8x8 in parallel.

Equally frustrated!

I'm having the same issue with my brand new (refurbished) iMac Pro that I just got yesterday.

It came with 10.14.5 so I upgraded directly to 10.15.4 and migrated from my 2017 iMac also running 10.15.4.

Here is my log:

It must have happened when I manually put it to sleep pressing the power botton once. I noticed the fan was still running but the screen turned black. Upon returning I couldn't get the machine to wake up again.

I'm also having this issue with my new Macbook Pro purchase from this week. Becoming more worried that it's a hardware issue but can't pinpoint what's going on.

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB / Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Early this week, I got a new computer and began to set everything up, downloading software (Chrome, Slack, Word), etc. And 15 minutes in, the computer screen/trackpad froze, the fan went full speed and shut down. That worried me on a new computer. Did not copy the error code.

Continued to have issues shut down issues throughout the week. Whenever the computer was left idle and went to sleep for more than 3+ hours, it would shut down for some strange reason. Always unexpected error shut down error when turning it back on. Didn't copy error code. I did an SMC reset, but it didn't help with the issue.

Today, I decided to factory reset by formatting the hard drive and installing new OS. And the same issue happened to me from day 1. While installing word, the computer screen/trackpad froze, the fan went full speed and shut down.

This is the error that I got and looking for suggestions... Should I get this device looked at by Apple? Would really hate to need to mail these in during these times.

Having exactly the same issue with MacBook Pro 16" i7 version.

I am almost sure, that this problem occurs only when I have plugged my Mac to external monitor.

Currently I am using 2x 4k monitors, and it crashes like, 2x - 3x a day and it is kind of annoying.

When I have plugged only 1 monitor, it doesn't seem to be different, It crashed just few minutes ago.

I have plugged them with DP -> USB-C cable directly. But this issue was present event when using Full HD monitor.

I don't think it is strictly related to temperature, because crash appeared to me at 50°C at least once, even though it seems like, most cases of unexpected shutdown happens under heavy performace.

I am almost sure, I didn't have this issue EVER without external monitor plugged in.

Also this issue never appeared on my MacBook Pro 13" 2019, which I used with the same accessories and it leads me to point, that MacBook Pro 16" has dedicated Graphic card, which is always used when external monitor is plugged in, so it might me connected.

I have had this problem since February 2020 with TWO brand new 16" mac book pros. Apple replaced the first Mac book pro after being unable to fix the problem. I waited three weeks for a new one and within 24 hours of receiving the second brand new 16" mac book pro, the problem occurred twice within 24 hours. It has occured repeatedly every day since. There are no peripherals attached. It sometimes happens when using Word, but there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason as an explanation as to why it happens. Engineering has not been able to fix the problem. As soon as the Apple stores open in Manhattan I will return the second new Mac book pro for full credit.

At the moment there is no fix other than looking at recently installed apps and removing them. Well I haven’t heeded that advice yet but my often crashes have not happened in a few days, so I’m somewhat reluctant to break it if it’s working.

Like you and a whole lot of us, @apple can you get off your bum and do something about this annoying crash.

I am having the exact same problem right now too. Is there any suggestions on what to do to fix it? I am also missing my Touch Bar.

I've had an elevated Apple support case number on this since Mar 29, working with the same support contact in many phone and email communications. The fix above was one of the first suggested and didn't work. Nothing has worked so far after sending multiple log files to Apple support. Has not been isolated so far to any peripherals (including 2 external monitors), applications, boot up files. Updated IOS 10.15.4 released Apr 8(?) also didn't help.
