Whenever I make the mistake of turning on my Mac mini before I turn on my display, I lose all of my desktop images. They all revert to the stock dynamic changing images in the 'Desktop pictures' folder. What makes it even weirder is that it replaces the images on the fly even if I have deleted the whole folder of 'Desktop pictures'!

This only seems to happen on the new version of the Mac mini. I never lose the images on my older Mac mini (the previous generation).

Have you considered just letting the Mac Mini and Display Sleep?

FWIW I sleep my Mac’s 24-7 because I feel that it is easier on the hardware than repeated shutdowns and startups.
