downgrade from catalina to high sierra

Hello, I have a late 2013 iMac. I recently upgraded to Catalina but found that the latest version of Ableton isn't supported by it. I'd like to downgrade to High Sierra. I don't have a time machine for previous operating system. Whenever I reboot with command+R it doesn't give me the option to restore original OS. The troubleshooting guides I've found say that I should get High Sierra on an external drive to install with command+R screen, but I'm wondering if there is an easier way, thank you.

Thanks for the reply. When I got to reinstall mac os --> select disc to install on, there were no disc options to choose from. I got stuck there.

Under disc utility there were different restore options but it wouldn't let me restore on a startup disc. I'm not sure how to partition, or which disc I should be restoring to, if any.

Thanks for the help, I just want to make sure I'm proceeding correctly since I'm unfamiliar with all this.

The third option lets you restore the original operating system.

Use Disk Utility to partition your Mac to have enough room. You should give enough room to have at least 15% + system requirements free on both partitions. Backup your data before installing anything new on the existing partition.
