Instead of going thru the System/Software Update preference pane download and apply the macOS Catalina 10.15.4 Combo Update.

How much is plenty? If over 20 GB then boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) and try installing from there.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.
Could you please be more specific as to what is or is not happening so we can help you? It sounds as if you have completed your download, but for some reason it is not installing. Also please provide the year and model of yourMacBook. Thank you.
I have the same problem. My Macbook pro (2012) has plenty memory space left and is updated upto Catalina 10.15.2. I does not want to install 10.15.4. My Macbook keeps asking for the update. Frustrating :(
