Delete old Backups from Time Machine

I am using a new external drive(4TB) with Time Machine. On the drive that I had been using for TM(1TB), can I recover some space by deleting old backup versions? I hope to use the older drive to backup selected files, but not my entire Mac hard drive. MacBook Pro, OS Mojave

Thanks for your help.

Typically, messing with and/or manually delete old time Machine Backups corrupts the Time Machine database.

Not recommended.

Time Machine manages its own backups:

Erasing/reformatting is the surest way of a successfully removing all content and starting a new.

Simply deleting Time Machine database, can lead to issues of items getting stuck in the trash bin and no way to remove them.

Merging the partition is another issue.
