MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

I recently bought a brand-new MBP 16' too and I experienced several crashes each day even though I had update it to the lastest version of MacOS. I am also very disappointed about Apple's software quality.

What helped was the following:

  • Reset System Management Controllers (SMC) according to the instructions given here (sorry, just the German link; please look for the corresponding English version)

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201295

  • Additionally I reset the NVRAM or PRAM even though I don't really know if was necessary:

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT204063

  • Additionally I turned off power nap in the energy control.

I did all steps after the latest update of MacOS.

Since then no more crashes.

Let uns know if this help for you too.

Stay healthy!

They don’t want to talk about until they find solution but I guess they know about the problem. Just don’t want admit it. Windows isn’t better. Last week my computers updated their windows 10 to latest versions. That broke printer’s drivers. I spent whole day and solution was simple.

Turning off Power Nap while plugged in fixed the problem for me. Power Nap is useless for me anyway, I don't want the computer to check emails, etc, while asleep anyway.

I think Apple are aware of the problem and will fix soon, some reports of it fixed in latest 10.15.5

Same exact problem. It was so bad on my brand new 16" machine that after being past around on a support call, I asked that they send me a new one, same specs (2.4G 8-core i9, 64G 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro and Intel UHD GFX cards). I received it, returned the original... and it does the exact same thing. I disabled the power nap and will next disable automatic graphics switching if that doesn't work, but they need to fix the software. Over $4k for a dysfunctional computer is not good business.

I was so desperate that I installed the 10.15.5 public beta 3 meanwhile but this does not solve the problem for me.

I do not think that this is a hardware issue. As so many of us are suffering by this bug I do not understand why they are not fixing this with a top priority.

Is any of the developers here who has experience with beta 4 or beta 5 regarding this issue? I would really appreciate feedback.

I took a 3 year hiatus from Mac computers and built some PC gaming rigs. All run well but the one with the AMD GPU gives me a bit of an adventure because AMD is horrific with driver updates. But that was an AMD issue, not Windows proper.

I have a $600 HP pavilion laptop that trucks along. Never a blue screen of death.

So it’s very disappointing to come back to Mac and see how the quality of Mac OS has sort of fallen off. Not only has it felt as if it’s lost a few MPH off its fastball, it’s also become very “bureaucratic“ in how it runs. Changing simple settings caused Mac OS to throw up signs saying I can’t do that. And if I want to, I have to do this or that first. Sometimes multiple steps. Then I could return and change the setting. Has the department of motor vehicles taken over? It was never like this before. The simplicity and rock solid reliability isn’t there like it was when I left.

Anyway, this MacBook I purchased still has a lot of upside potential so I’m optimistic that these sorts of things will get fixed. It’s a such a beautiful machine. Can’t say the same for Catalina.

It's somewhat helpful to know I'm not alone. It's massively frustrating that Apple doesn't seem to care. I too called and the rep basically said, "There's no reports, it's probably a software you installed." I did reset everything, even did a full install from a freshly formatted SSD. Problem didn't change. When I told him about this thread, he didn't care at all. It's truly amazing that one can spend a boatload of money on a new premium device and that Apple doesn't care (and I'm an Apple guy, but this frustrates me!!).

Looks like the next version 10.15.5 fixes this issue. So, Apple does know about it but they don't care to admit it or don't advise their tech support (that's so frustrating but that's so Apple). So, you can wait, or go ahead and install the beta (now in the fifth version).

The software you installed? Really? Then why was my brand new 16 inch MacBook pro crashing as I went through the first time initial setup. It went down twice. Once when I tried to transfer files from my HP laptop with the migration assistant and then again simply selecting if I wanted light or dark mode for the desktop.

After that nonsense the only thing I installed before closing the laptop was one thing and one thing only, an update to MacOS Catalina.

So yes, technically, it is the software we installed and it’s called Catalina.

Just got the notification that Public Beta 4 was ready to be installed. Fingers crossed that it fixes the issue. Will report back if I continue to have crashing issues after it has installed and I've had a chance to test Power Nap functionality.

I have 10.15.4, which fixes the problem. Yes, it’s still in beta, but seems very stable. For me it was worth it to now have my computer reboot 2-3 times per day (even with an SSD, you can corrupt a file). All that being said, usually betas don’t go past 5 or 6 so probably soon...

I have same issue. Beta 4 didn't solve any issues for me. My issues happens when I undock my macbook from desktop setup with 2 monitors and docking station,

Maybe it's specific bug on my case. Macbook crashes (sometimes) when I open from sleep after removal from docking station.

Have installed 10.15.5 and enabled nap settings as per default. Have left the machine a number of times through out the day long enough for it to start napping. Good news - no crashes so far. Will leave over night to see what happens. But positive initial signs that this is fixed.

Honestly your case is starting to sound more like you could potentially have some type of hardware problem if none of the recent updates have helped or remedied your problem. A few people have noted that they had this problem and Apple has replaced their logic board and Touch ID sensor, you may want to contact Apple and possibly setup a repair with them and see if that permanently remedies the problem for you.
