Mail storage

I don;;t use the email app that is included on my iMac. It is completely empty as I use gmail and usually view it with my iPhone. the problem is that according to my hard drive info, the mail is taking up 9.98GB. Why is this and how can I fix that? It shouldn't be using space when I use only gmail online, right?
