MacOs Catalina 10.15.4
Verify what macOS is installed >About this Mac.
You can download the stand alone update:
Combo update macOS 10.15.4 https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2037?locale=en_US
If you still have an issue you can boot into Safe Boot Mode and then launch the installer from this environment.
a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login

In the end I downloaded the update and installed it manually, and the error I got was that I had *insufficient disk space*. I think that was the problem all along, and the error silently occurred with the automatic update.
When I finally got it to work, I had about 20gb of free disk space. You'd think it's way more than necessary, but 10gb for example, is too little, so try be on the safe side.
I also experienced this problem, and in addition, the Time Machine backup was giving "could not create local backup snapshot" error thus leading to continually reduced disk space. I cleared about 12 Gb space and removed Google Drive from the startup items. It then did update to 10.15.5 but NB at one point it completely powered off and had to be manually powered up again (despite connection to mains). After the update completed, it was then possible to carry out a Time Machine backup. Finally I put the large files back on again, and backed up again. Extremely time-consuming process. There should be a clear error message when the update issue is insufficient empty disk space!
Thank you so much! Problem is solved :)
Safe mode and a direct download of the update from Apple solved the problem for me. Thanks
I tried this as well and it has not worked for me. My MacBook will not update.
I entered safe boot and it still didn’t work.
