I was given a phone by a friend but they do not know the password , how can I make a new password or get into the phone?

Is the phone activation locked? If yes:
To remove the activation lock you will need to have the Apple ID/Password of the rightful owner of the iPhone unless there are extenuating circumstances, e.g., you friend has a purchase receipt with the phone’s serial number on it or the friend inherited it through the death of someone and has death-related proof of ownership.
