What exactly are you trying to do? Do you want to enter a math equation in a word processor document? Do you want to use the Apple Pencil to write and solve math equations? Do you want to type in and solve math equations? Do you want to take pictures of math equations and have an app solve them?
There are apps in the App Store for all of those possibilities. One example -> MyScript Calculator on the App Store

If you need to to type subscripts and superscripts to do exponents and variables, the iPad cannot do these.
You may need to look for apps, in the Apple iOS App Store that support Unicode characters, like mathematical characters and symbols.
Are you asking how to type, or are you trying to write something with an Apple Pencil. Please explain.
I would like to insert it in a word document, such as Notes or Pages
Pages has an “equation” menu option where you can type or paste in a LaTex or MathML format equation.
