auto shutdown with 25% battery

I own a 2017 MacBook Air. In recent days, when on battery power, my Mac has just shut down. When I plug it in and it re-starts, it shows that I have 25% battery. I cannot find anywhere to change this to a lower percentage. I also get no low battery alert on my screen (although 25% is not a low battery IMHO).

Please advise. Running latest version of Catalina.

In addition to the link @John Galt posted try Option-clicking on the battery icon to check the battery condition. Any condition other than "Normal" or "Good" means the battery should be replaced. You can also try running the Apple Diagnostics.

This post did not address my problem. My Mac shuts down when battery level reaches 25%, with no dialogue box warning me that shutdown is imminent. When I power up, the battery icon read 25% both times. I have found no place in system preferences to adjust the level at which shutdown will occur, or any way to set up a notification when power is reaching a shutdown level.

Check the condition of your Mac computer’s battery states as follows:

  • Service Battery: The battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Take your computer in for service.

Batteries are not user-replaceable.

At present taking your Mac in for service isn't an option, but it continues "You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer."

It is possible to replace the battery. OWC has a replacement battery kit with all the necessary tools included. However, the quality of third party Lithium-ion Batteries is extremely poor even from a company with such a good reputation as OWC.

If you would replace the battery yourself I would highly recommend you keep the original Apple battery safe so you could later reinstall the original battery and receive an official Apple battery repair since the Apple batteries are a lot better quality. If you store the battery make sure it is protected from damage (punctures, bending, etc.). The battery should only have a 30% or so charge when stored.

Apple won't perform a battery repair if the laptop contains a third party battery.
