Spam Group FaceTime Calls with over 32 members

Starting around 2 am this morning I began receiving group facetime calls from a mix of numbers in my contacts and random numbers I didn't have saved. Since then I've received about 7 more calls throughout the day. The calls only ring once or twice before ending. What's even more interesting is that, after going back through the numbers involved in the calls in the "recents" tab of the facetime app, there were more than the 32 total people involved with the highest being 59. The reason I think this happened is that every number was repeated once or twice. This is obviously pretty odd, and I would brush it off as spam or a prank but the fact that the same numbers were registered as being in the same call multiple times and that this caused there to be over the 32 person limit makes me think this is more than that. Anyone else have this issue or know anything about it?

You might want to consider removing your cell # from FaceTime settings but leave your Apple ID as a method of your contacts can reach you on FaceTime by entering your Apple ID. This was recommended by a senior Apple tech. My 80 year old mom is having the same thing happen to her. Apple recommends un-checking your phone number under FaceTime settings "where you can be reached" and this should stop the unwanted FaceTime group calls.

The Apple senior advisor also said to leave Feedback to Apple on what needs to be changed on FaceTime per this link:

I 100% agree! When this happened to me back in May, my girlfriend didn’t have an iPhone so we were already using WhatsApp. So shutting off FaceTime for a week was something I could manage.

From reading a lot of these posts, it seems that the outcome of what occurs after you answer the phone is somewhat different for everyone.

One thing that we all have in common is that we are being spammed through our video, which makes me feel uncomfortable. Getting a regular spam phone call is annoying as ****, but I am never spooked. Video chats are much more personal, so when a stranger or someone we don’t know is trying to breach that threshold it is quite uncomfortable, especially with 30 other phone numbers you have never encountered before.

This just started for me last night and has continued this morning. I started blocking callers, but I expect that, like spam, the calls will continue with other phone numbers. Unfortunately, as with calls on the iPhone, blocking or declining calls still allows a caller to leave a message.

Apple, please make necessary changes to prevent blocked callers from leaving messages and set something up so the only people who can get through via FaceTime are the contacts that one has on their phone. Having to disable FaceTime just to prevent spam callers is ridiculous.

Omg this happened to my husband last night! I answered because it looked like a familiar area code and I figured it was his siblings calling from Oklahoma. To my surprise it was like 7 people asking for a girl named amber. I told them they had the wrong number and hung up. Then I realized they had a group chat and had texted “dinner for 7” 🤦🏻‍♀️. Anyways I texted them to eff off and left the group chat. My husband called me telling me that they called like 5 times while he was working. He just blocked them so hopefully that’s the end of that. People just have too much time in their hands!!!

I picked up to see what was going on I heard what sounded like you young kids voices

commenting on the background of my video

i had no option to end the call so I had to shut off my phone which I did immediately after telling them never to call me again as I did not know them

didnt call for 8 hours or so And is now spamming me

as I said it says FaceTime but it didn’t look like FaceTime. There was no video for them just icons kinda like a men’s room symbol from the neck up

and as I stated above there was no button to end the call or do anything else like turn my camera off , flip which camera nothing

should have taken a screen shot

This is so upsetting... My 90 year old grandmother was harassed by these repeated calls from 4:02am-- 7:40 am non-stop last night!!! She got no sleep and at one point answered (not realizing it's facetime) and they were all laughing at her. APPLE YOU NEED TO DO BETTER. This is completely unacceptable that there has been no effort to resolve this ongoing issue. Does anyone have the tiktok videos or articles speaking to this tiktok prank? I couldn't find anything but I am furious. I will disable her facetime but she uses that to see family since she can't because of the pandemic.

I keep getting blasted with these group facetime calls, people calling, texting asking who this... why isn't Apple doing anything about this?!!!!! it's very frustrating, I just upgraded to an Iphone and I will NEVER do it again! I regret switching, never had this issue before. Upon my research, I discovered through the comments here that this is some stupid challenge on tiktok.

MAKE.IT.STOP. I hate all these stupid kids.

I had to re-enable FaceTime today because my roommate needed to use it for an appointment and only has Samsung herself, and I was very creeped out to see it looked like I was somehow part of a call in progress. It was a group chat with probably about ten numbers and no option to decline the call, only to join it, and when I tapped on it to see if I could find out more info and either hang up the call I appeared to be part of or block the numbers, it told me I couldn't because there was already a blocked number in there! So why was it still allowing me to appear to be part of the call?! Even if it is only because of a TikTok prank, this is annoying and creepy and something needs to be done about it!

Hey guys! Sorry to bump after a year. I got my first facetime spam starting 4 days ago - it has been non-stop, over 300 numbers blocked so far.

My 3 year old daughter has been accidentally answering them and going on video without a t-shirt on.

Apple said there's no feature "Only allow initial communication from contacts list" in:

  • FaceTime
  • iMessage
  • SMS
  • Phone

I'm wondering at what point my daughter will end up in some archive of "children captured from facetime spam calls" and who I will need to sue and how much to sue for? My guess is Apple.com (the company) since my carrier (AT&T) has no control over FaceTime.

I have FaceTime turned off everywhere and we still get notifications to click that turn everything back on and enter these group calls with spammers.

I know there's going to be some trolls replying to me like "why's your kid using an iPad" - my kid uses it for education.

It seems like cases have picked up again in the past few weeks. I think there are others who haven’t found this thread yet bc it’s such a strange situation.

Beware. I also received mass texts of tik tok videos with my photo on them. Probably definitely phishing. Something to be aware of if your daughter accidentally clicks a link & they hack into your phone or ipad.

If I had children, I’d be fuming.

This just happened to me!! It’s freaking 2:30A and I have been woken up by random FaceTime. I debated where to answer when I did I was met by a young man and woman. The girl saw that I answered and asked “If I liked balls in my butt” I’m going to be mad as heck if this is going to continue. After reading all the comments I’m just going to keep my FaceTime deleted for the time being.

Did anyone ever get a conclusive answer on stopping this and WTF it is about? I just received a FaceTime with like 20 other people and looking at the numbers they were all numbers that were secret Winchell around mine same area code same exchange and just the last four numbers different so clearly it’s some thing calling a whole bunch of numbers in a row. The text that came along with it said get the F*** on! I went through the list and I blocked each and every number but the number that the call originated from was unknown and restricted so I had no way to block that one.
