iPhone locking after going to the power off screen.

How do I prevent my iPhone from locking and disabling Face ID when I go to the power off screen.

Applies to: the iOS power off screen and the power off screen with emergency S.O.S.

Host Device: iPhone XS

iOS Version: 13.4

How to replicate: Press and hold the volume up or down and sleep/wake (side) buttons or quickly press volume up, volume down and the sleep/wake (side) button. Your device will lock and say “Your passcode is required to enable Touch/Face ID”

That's normal....

Your device will require your passcode when you do the following:

  • Turn on or restart your device
  • Press the Home button or swipe up to unlock your device (you can change this)
  • Update your software
  • Erase your device
  • View or change passcode settings
  • Install iOS or iPadOS Configuration profiles

The parameters for your Face ID (or Touch ID on older phones) are stored in the secure enclave, an encrypted area in the processor chip. They are copied to RAM after you successfully log in with your passcode, where they can subsequently be used by the unlock process. But RAM is cleared when you shut down the phone, so Face ID can’t be used until the parameters are copied back to RAM.
