Outlook now won’t accept an app specific password

I am regularly asked to sign in again to my iCloud email account in Outlook app. It won’t accept the main password, so I generate an app specific password (ASP) via Apple account. I am randomly asked to sign in again days later and I have to generate another ASP. I just got used to keep generating an ASP. I thought perhaps they only last for a limited time? Now it won’t accept a new ASP. The sign in button is not highlighted. So I copy and paste the newly generated password but cannot proceed. Any ideas?

Hello CarolinaDanby,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand you're unable to generate an app-specific password for Outlook, when you attempt to sign in.

Having the ability to access your apps, is essential in enjoying your device. I can help point you in the right direction.

Based on your post, you're using an iPad mini 4. I suggest signing into the Apple ID account page on a web browser. From there, you can delete the app-specific password for Outlook. Then, restart the iPad mini 4 and see if you can generate an app-specific password and sign in successfully in the application of Outlook. Here's two helpful articles on how to perform each step:

  1. Using app-specific passwords (Please follow the section that says, "How to manage app-specific passwords"
  2. Restart your iPad

Please let me know if that helps.

Kind regards.

Thanks. I keep doing that. I should have said this has been happening for a long time. Eventually i can generate a new password, but it only works for a while. The sign in being greyed out was a new thing though. Restarting Outlook sorted it.

I guess while i have time on ny hands i wanted to find out why i need to keep generating a new password? All other apps/devices seem to be fine with their ASP.

Its just Outlook with Icloud email. It happens on my Android phone too.

CarolinaDanby,

Thanks for getting back to us and for providing that information.

I recommend making sure you have the latest update of Outlook. To do that, please follow the section that says, "Update your apps manually": Update apps or use automatic downloads

If that doesn't help, I recommend contacting the app developer for Outlook to review this further. You can contact them by following these steps: How to contact an app developer

Cheers.
