mini ipad stuck on activation lock

My elderly mother was given in mini iPad 2, we use it for FaceTime and Scrabble. Unfortunately she pressed something and the activation lock has appeared. Despite many attempts we are unable to unlock it with the Apple ID and password. Any ideas how to solve this, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s really important to try and get this working as she lives far away.

Question two – if I buy another iPad mini, and set it up with a new Apple ID and password for her, and then post it to her. Would it then work, once I’ve helped to log onto her Wi-Fi?

many thanks

If you have forgotten the AppleID credentials, they can be recovered here:

If replacing the iPad, assuming that Apps have previously been purchased (which will be associated with the AppleID used to purchase) you should setup the new iPad with the existing AppleID - not create a new account.

Hello, In reference to a previous email about my mum’s and iPad being stuck on activation lock. Just another thought. I have all the details of her iPad including the serial number, and in case I am unable to sort it out I read somewhere that Apple could deactivate her iPad if they have the serial number. It would be really helpful particularly during the coronavirus academic as she is on her own and we can’t FaceTime or playing games with her. Any ideas would be welcome thank you

Nobody here is from Apple, we are all end-user contributors just like yourself. The Apple Support Communities are a place where those needing help can seek technical assistance with common problems.

I fear that any resolution will require you to be “hands on” with the device. If you have the iPad - and the necessary AppleID credentials (per my previous replies) - we can try to walk-though the issue.

Your alternative is to directly contact Apple Support. However, given the age of the device (the iPad2 being long out of support), this might be tricky. That said, it costs you nothing to reach-out and ask.

The link to Contact Support is at top-right of this page.

I hope that I have managed to help - if only in directing you to a potential alternative avenue for assistance. If we can help further, we’re still here.
