Apple TV (1st gen) stuck on apple logo screen. What should I do?

We have had a 1st generation Apple TV for a few years now but for some reason whenever we try to use it now it just gets stuck on the Apple logo screen forever and won’t respond to any input from the remote. Can someone point me in the right direction?

To verify we are talking about the same model …

  • If your Apple TV is a 3.9" black box, then it is at least 2nd generation.
  • If your Apple TV is a 7.7" silver-white/aluminum box, then it is 1st generation.

Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support

Apple TV (1st generation) no longer has access to the iTunes Store.

Apple TV (1st generation) no longer will sync through modern versions of iTunes (v12.7 or later).

Apple TV (1st generation) is classified as obsolete, without support options.
