Restoring contacts

I have signed in to icloud on a new iphone, but somehow I have lost most of my contacts both on my old and new iphone. I have tried to restore contacts from icloud, but the only available dates are from after the contacts have disappeared. Strangely I had already done a back-up of my previous iphone before just before this happened.

Have you tried restoring the backup of your previous phone? Note that iCloud contacts are completely separate from an iCloud backup.

Contacts can come from many places. For example, an iOS device can sync to Google contacts, Yahoo contacts, AOL contacts, Microsoft contacts, etc, as well as iCloud contacts and contacts just entered only on the phone. On the phone each of these is stored separately, so if your contacts come from any non-Apple sources you need to add those sources in Settings/Passwords & Accounts.
