Using external hard drive - PC to Mac

if I have data I pulled off my PC to an external hard drive, is it easy to put it on my Mac or use my Mac to view it? It would be mainly photos, music, but also some MS Office files. Hope to get rid of my PC which is basically acting as a giant external hard drive for all my family photos and old documents. I do not have MS Office for Mac on one of my Macs.
