yahoo redirect

Suddenly my searches on safari are being redirected from Google to Yahoo. How can I undo this without buying some type of malware software?

Malwarebytes is free.

You have adware/malware installed. Use  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. It may be necessary to run more than one scan. After scanning a couple of times, restart the computer and test. If necessary, follow the manual instructions.  Do not download any other programs that are listed in the articles.

See if the below helps. I would scroll down to the below or you might fall asleep.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions, uninstall any you don't recognize, and then turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Safari/Preferences/General - see what the Home Page is set to. If something you don't recognize, see if you can replace it with something you want.

 Safari menu/Clear History.

System Preferences and remove any Profiles you see.

Hello MNCat,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to use Google to search in the Safari app, as the search goes to Yahoo instead on your Mac. If you have macOS 10.13 installed on your Mac as you show in your profile, please go to System Preferences > App Store and enable "Install system data and security updates." Then go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and remove all unexpected 3rd party Login items in your user profile. Then restart your Mac and test your situation again:

Cheers!

Thanks for replying, MNCat, and that additional info, it really helps! If you haven't already, please go to the Safari menu in the Safari app, then choose the Clear History option and clear all history. Then quit the Safari app, hold the shift key on your keyboard and then open Safari again while holding the shift key and test your issue again.

If Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing

Have a great day and thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

The Malwarebytes took care of the redirect. Thank you for that. Guess I will need to scan periodically. Still have something called Automator in my applications folder. I have no idea where it came from. Causes a little robot like critter to arrive in my tray. Cannot move this to the trash. Any idea what it is?
