Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support

There is an important distinction between 2nd and 3rd generation for restoring: one of these must not be separately powered, while the other model must be powered. See link below.


Restore your Apple TV through iTunes - Apple Support


If you have macOS Catalina (without iTunes), then the connected Apple TV would appear in the sidebar of a Finder window, instead of iTunes. The rest is the same as in the link.
