Do I need an external hard disk when I use cloud? I use my new iMac for light duties and wonder if an external hard disk is necessary to back up?

FWIW, iCloud does not back up the OS or Apps you have installed. So yes, you should have at least one external drive for Time Machine or other back up apps.

iCloud is not a substitute for backups.
You should be backing up on a regular basis. The simplest way is to use an external hard drive and Time Machine.
