“Send Read Reciepts” has vanished.

Okay I have an acquaintance that has an iPhone. They’re one of these that text dozens of brief texts instead on one large one so I Occasionally turn off the “Send read reciepts” just so i don’t Get flooded once they see I read their message. Anyway, like maybe a Few days ago I turned it on, but now I just went to turn it back off and the option is completely gone. It only has “Hide Alert” and that’s it. I sent them a message and it went through as a text. They haven’t replied.

Would them blocking me turn my iMessages to them into normal text messages? And also, why did the “send read reciepts” option disappear? I looked through my contacts and it is suddenly gone on every contact that is not an iPhone. I have not updated, but this is definitely a fairly recent thing because I just turned it on a few days ago.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that the option to send read receipts is an option missing from a lot of your contacts; I'd like to help.

The option to send read receipts is only available via iMessage, the is not an option for regular text messages.

"iMessage texts can include photos, videos, and other info. You can see when other people are typing, and send read receipts to let them know when you’ve read their messages."

Set up Messages on iPhone

If the messages you send to this particular contact are not being sent as an iMessage, you will not see the option to send read receipts. This could have happened for a number of reasons, all of which would be controlled on their end. One potential reason is they may be in an area where they can only send text messages (an area without cellular data).
