Shutting MacBook down drains entire battery

When in the evening I shut down my computer for the night (with the battery charged between 20% - 90%) I often wake up with its battery completely empty. Today again: at midnight still had 84%, this morning 0%. What causes this/how can I prevent this?

Batteries age over time, click the battery icon in the top menu bar and if it says that your battery needs servicing go get a replacement battery at the Apple Authorised Service Provider.

also check that you properly shut it down and not just close the cover. Click Apple logo in TOP menu bar and click shut down.
