You make a good point about the confusion. I'd recommend the OP look over www.apple.com/tv to view all of Apple's TV offerings so they can understand. They include:

• Apple TV HD (hardware)
• Apple TV 4K (hardware)
• Apple TV App
• Apple TV +
• Airplay
• Accessories

All of them are different but until one looks them over to see the differences yes they can be confusing.

And to answer your next question or two, you will get access to ~two dozen Apple TV+ exclusive series, and to several Apple TV+ films.

Other content beyond the Apple-exclusive content is also available for purchase or rental within the Apple TV app or related,

as has long been the case.

Confusingly, Apple TV+ is the subscription service, and Apple TV is the app. And the Apple TV app will offer to sell content access beyond that of the free-with-certain-Apple-purchases Apple TV+ subscription content.
