Was this Purchased Off of a Web Site?

If so, view the Terms & Conditions, and see if anything can be done about this. Typically, you'd see this being looked into further by the site itself, if you were to have purchased this off of a site like eBay.

Looks like you've been scammed. You see, the phone probably already was malfunctioning/had a bad battery. Confirm this by going into Settings>Battery>Battery Health to see battery health. If it's pretty low like below 80% or so you may want to get a new battery. At apple you can get a new battery, or you can try yourself using iFixit or something. NOTE: self-repair will void your warranty(if any). Opening screws is the point of no return.

Huh? Seems like no so-called "friend" to me.

If I went through this, I'd just blow it off, and not go through any legal matters.

Get an out of warranty replacement if you can, or just recycle it, buy a new phone, and consider this a learning experience in trusting strangers on the Internet.

In theory you can get your $200 back. But it will probably cost you more than that in court costs and lawyer’s fees.
