Sampling rate reverting

When I set the sampling rate to 48kHz for my external mic, it reverts back to 44.1kHz after a few seconds. Running Catalina 10.15.4 on a 2.8Ghz 15in Retina MBP. It reverts back to 44.1 whatever I set it to. I tried to delete com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist in the preferences folder because I read in another thread that that file may be corrupted. That worked for a little while, but then it went back to 44.1 after I changed it to 48kHz. Any idea how to fix this or why it's happening?

Sounds like this is what mic is wanting 44.1kHz (?)

What is the issue at 44.1kHz ...why try and fight it.
