Safari re-opens at login "halfway up the screen"

Hi,

I have a problem with Safari re-opening with the window positioned halfway up the screen, like so:

If I quit and then re-open Safari, it opens as expected, with the top of the window touching the menu bar.

This doesn't happen if I untick "Reopen windows when logging back in", so I suspect the errant window position comes from the reopening somehow. Nothing appears in Console that relates to it. Any ideas on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

An anomaly like this is could be chalked up to benign glitch in the macOS—

You can try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc.

Reboot an test, the reboot will take a little longer as caches get rebuilt.

If that does not resolve the issue— I would not hesitate to reinstall the combo update on top of your exiting macOS

Combo update macOS 10.15.4 https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2037?locale=en_US

Hi there,

This has started happening again, and to Finder windows as well as Safari windows:

I've tried both your suggestions, plus deleted my Safari preferences .plist file — which seemed to more or less reset Safari — all to no avail. I've also tried unticking the "Reopen windows…" option in the Reboot dialog, and resetting the PRAM.

Is there a cache of some sort that determines window placement at login, and could this be reset?

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Hi

Yes, there is a sort of cache for that, and it is on the core operating system. I hope it solves your problem, and I think it may solve, but please post a feedback after trying this:

Go to System Preferences -> General

and CHECK the checkbox called "Close windows when quitting an app" (mark the checkbox)

Close Safari, reboot.

Repeat the tests you had already mentioned/tried above.

I am almost sure this will solve your problem. You can then try to reenable it (if you need that feature)

NOTE: by checking that checkbox, once you reboot, all other app window positions (when closed) will be forgotten. Technically this willl make MacOS forget the window restoration settings cache for every app. In practice, theres nothing to worry (it is just a cache of application window positions to restore once opened again)

Try,

The directory path where those window placements are saved is

/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Saved Application State/

You can safely delete any subfolder inside it, corresponding to the problematic application, just take a look there

if in case you feel insecure, just rename such folder adding something (some suffix like _TEST_RENAMED) to it

reboot, test, and check if that solves the problem

I can suggest to safely move to the trash the corresponding problematic folder (which is the cache window position folder, named like the application) inside that directory
