Location of microphone cable in iMac 2011?

Hi,

I'm just looking for that!

Where can I disconnect the microphone inside? I’ve tried a few of the obvious cables but no joy.

I know I can ‘turn it off/down’ in settings but I prefer certainty on this one. Unplugged camera no problem but microphone is not alongside it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

J.

You might try iFixit.com - look up your model for their repair instructions. Most describe the process of taking the Mac apart and showing what the various parts & cables are. They often also have a complete teardown video.

Other than that, my suggestion is to go to System Preferences > Sound and change your input device to Line In. That will disable the built-in mic.

Hi,

Yeah thank you, I’ve looked at their tear downs and guides but none say where the mic cables plugs in to the board.

I thought it would be alongside the camera like previous models but can’t see it.

Tried all connections but none disable it.

I do know that the fans work well !! Haha.

I’ve got it set like you say but it’s not putting me at ease. This is Snowdens fault!

Do you where it is in the body of the computer? On the outside I mean. Is there an opening?

Apple is being a bit secretive with this one......

Thanks for replying.

iMac models introduced in 2012 through 2015

Front panel

Ambient light sensor

Your iMac uses the ambient light sensor to adjust the display's brightness based on your environment.

Dual mics

The dual microphones operate independently from all other audio input ports and are always available. The built-in microphones support recording at bit depths of 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample and at sample rates of 44.1kHz, 48kHz, or 96kHz. Audio recorded from the microphone is presented as a stereo data stream with the same data on both the left and right channels. You can adjust the microphone gain from -16 dB to +30 dB. Dual microphones enable beam-forming technology, which delivers more accuracy when using dictation and reduces background noise for FaceTime video calls.

FaceTime HD camera

You can use the FaceTime HD camera to video chat using FaceTime over a broadband connection, take pictures using Photo Booth, or capture video through iMovie. A green indicator light turns on when the camera is in use.

Your response to this question is VERY HELPFUL, and the sketch helped me find what I believe is the mic. It seems that, for a Mac introduced in 2012 - 2015, the built-in microphone is on the top edge of the screen! Is that correct? I think I see it, but I'm not sure where the built-in speakers are located. Are they on the bottom edge of the screen?

Well Done Mr Jones.

I never saw that on their site.

Sadly (Happily) I’ve already found it. It was labelled ‘Mic’ on the board but it was covered by cables and I was sure that was the first one I pulled. I thought speakers and microphone go together. Unlike my brain and my mind. They go opposite directions.

I decided to do the tried and tested tap, tap, tap then tug, tug, tug method. I dunno what I was thinking.

What a exhausting journey for something so simple. This social distancing is me unmake words hurt can’t brain. Y’know?

Thanks for the reply.

Wish I’d had this 4 days ago!

Cheers.
