Mac Pro late 2013 laggy issues

I have the 6,1 mac pro that is acting up. The issue began about a year ago, and I literally tried everything software wise I could think of to no avail. The CPU overloads easily and the mac pro feels like a 20 year old Pentium 6, gets super laggy when multiple apps are open such as Chrome, Zoom, etc, nothing fancy even. Then USB keyboard and mouse stops working. AHT reveals nothing, but the Geekbench CPU scores are way below normal, like 450/550 when it should be 750/3000 for single/multi core. OpenCL score seems ok.

Please don't suggest resetting NVRAM and SMC because I must have done that like a hundred times. I went to the Apple store and all they did was wipe the drive, which was somewhat ok for a while but the problem persists. I did have memory failure too but I replaced it. I also think that heat was an issue too, because I did play games on it for a while and it got really hot. I feel like it's either a bad CPU or something, but not sure. I'm thinking, is it just time to move on, or is there a solution? Help!

Wow I didn't even think about ram pairing. Thanks! However, I think I have bigger problems than that.. unless lack of ram pairing drives your cpu to 15% capacity.

Lack of RAM pairing won't affect the system to a noticeable extent.

Maybe that is it.. although I did take care to get the right part. It did work for a good year or so before troubles began. What kind of symptoms typically arise with non-crucial/OWC?

Symptoms can be varied and intermittent.

You can try running the Memtest86 memory test. You can create a bootable Memtest86 USB drive using Etcher (Mac/Windows/Linux). Option Boot the USB drive and select the orange icon labeled "EFI". Even if no errors are encountered doesn't necessarily mean the memory is good or compatible.

Yeah I ordered the 2011 because they cut the 2012 to 2 fans then who knows way, but Macs are all undercooled.

  1. I would say yes, my iMac has been as shown above for years. Right speed will be a trade off, the cooler the Mac runs the longer it'll last, some worry about the fans wearing out, but I think if that is a problem it'd be far cheaper replacing fans than the CPU. GPU. or the entire Mac
  2. If the CPU heats up it'll slow down, CPUs only run full speed when cool enough, I'm not positive but I think that is built into the Micro code by Intel.

Thanks! I didn't know iMacs have not one not two but three fans! my 2013 Pro has The One Fan.. wish I had that level of specificity. I have 2 followup questions:

  1. Is it ok to put fan speed at constant, as you've done, and how do you determine what the right speed is?
  2. Does lowering the max temp setting slow down the cpu through kernel_task or anything similar?

Nothing stands out in the report, but of late many MacPro6,1 are starting to have GOU failures, mostly due to heat.

What temperatures does this App report? Especially the GPU & CPU.

This App can be used to speed up the fans, all my iMacs would be dead without it.

Never ever ever drop fan speeds below the speed that the Mac itself is calling for.

The only obvious "boat anchor" is Google Chrome, a notorious resource hog. If you could tradition to faster and less resource hungry Browser that has not been neglected, such as Firefox or Safari, your computer would perform better.

You are also running ONE DIMM, in a machine that would interleave if there were two. You are not short of RAM, but another matched size module in an adjacent slot would speed up your Mac Pro a bit.
