How do I shut my device off?

Hold both buttons for at least 2 minutes.
If nothing happens follow these instructions to restore the phone from Recovery Mode—>If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen – Apple Support
And if that doesn’t work your phone’s hardware has failed. You can get it replaced, but you would still have a rather old phone.
I've done this several times, still no results.
Charge it for 30 minutes, then try again. If it still doesn’t restart your hardware has failed.
The Logo appears but for only a few seconds. Then the black screen appears.
Turning my phone off so that I can start it again. Holding the home and off button aren't working.
It was charging when (during an update) when I mistakenly unplugged it. It had charged for over an hour.

Then you need to force-restart the phone. Hold the TOP button and the HOME button until an Apple logo appears.
